"You'll scare off all the young'uns if you keep that up!" Wolfscar meowed, his voice harsh as he addressed Trapjaw. The story of a blind she-cat named Nutmeg had obviously frightened more than just one of the tiny kittens gathered at the Elders' feet.

"Here, kids. I'll tell you a fun story. Do you want to hear about the time that I first joined the Clans?"

The kittens nodded, some still shaking from the earlier story.

"Well....back when I was just a young tomcat...

~~~
"Star, your eyes are like two crystal-clear pools!"
"My eyes are amber," Starfire, the gray-and-white she-cat snapped, obviously unamused by the compliment.
"Pools of...honey!" Wolfie quickly righted himself, silently cursing himself that he didn't notice before. To avoid showing his embarrassment, he lifted a leg and began scratching himself behind the ear.
"Why do you do that?" Charlie asked, his powerful muscles rippling under his firey pelt as he padded up to the other two cats.
Wolfie's hindleg paused mid-scratch. "What do you mean?"
"Your leg. Why do you scratch yourself like a dog?" Charlie licked a paw as if to prove he was more cat-like than Wolfie.
"Because I was raised with them."
"I know that, idiot." Charlie hissed. "Your 'living' with them -- as in, living in the same alleyway and copying everything they do -- was a looong time ago. You live with us now. We're cats. You should act more like a cat."
"Yeah, yeah..." Wolfie continued to scratch his ear anyway. "So did you just come around to tell me to change myself, or was there another reason?"
Charlie sat down next to Starfire, who put her head affectionately on his shoulder. Wolfie knew they were kind of a thing, though he still flirted with Starfire anyway--that was just his way. The flame-colored tomcat spoke, "Yes, actually, there was. Are you familiar with a thing called a 'Clan'?"
"No. Never heard of it." Wolfie looked to Starfire, who shrugged.
Charlie nodded, "Apparently, a little farther from this human neighborhood, there's a group of cats who all live together and take care of each other. They call themselves a Clan. SkyClan, I think."
"How do you know this?" Starfire wondered, her amber eyes curious.
Charlie looked at his dear friend, "because I met their leader, Leafstar."
"Leafstar?" Wolfie chuckled at the ridiculous name.
Charlie shot the brown tom a stern look. "Yes, Leafstar. She's very powerful and very respected. She was telling me about her Clan, how they all take care of each other and hunt together and learn how to fight."
Wolfie's ears -- even the floppy one -- perked up at the sound of a fight. "Fight, huh?"
"They call themselves warriors."
"So what, are you suggesting that we join them?" Wolfie wondered.
"Yes, that's exactly what I'm suggesting. Leafstar offered for me to join. I told her that I had two friends that may want to join too...so I came to talk to you guys."
"'Too'?" Starfire repeated. "So, you've already made up your mind?"
Charlie nodded. "I have."
Wolfie shrugged, "Well, hell, I'll go learn how to fight."
Starfire stood up. "I'll follow you two wherever you want to go."
~~
The three arrived at SkyClan's camp, greeted with looks of curiosity. There were a good number of cats around -- more than Wolfie was expecting. Charlie noticed the cat he was looking for and made his way to her, Starfire and Wolfie in tow.
"Ah, Charlie, you're back." the brown tabby she-cat mewed, amber eyes gleaming. "Are these your friends?"
Charlie nodded. "This is Wolfie," he pointed to the brown tom, "and Starfire." the gray-and-white she-cat smiled.
"Greetings to you both. I am Leafstar, the leader of SkyClan."
~~
Wolfscar could tell that the kittens were falling asleep at such a dreary story, but it was better than them being scared. He coughed a few times to get them to wake up, and it worked, but for some reason he couldn't stop coughing.
"Are...you okay?" Mothkit squeaked, voice low.
"I'm fine," Wolfscar said as the coughing subsided. "Where was I...ah,  I'll just skip ahead to when SkyClan split--" another round of coughing overtook the tom, and Flower put her tail delicately on his back.
"Maybe you should go see Breezepaw." Scorchblaze suggested, though he looked more annoyed that Wolfscar was making so much noise more than anything.
"I want...to finish...the story...it's an elder's job to tell stories, after all." Wolfscar reasoned, trying to get his screaming lungs to calm down. Hacking again, he noticed blood dripping from his mouth. Quickly, so as not to scare the little kits, he got up and went to exit the den.
He turned before leaving, "Hey, Dave...finish the story for me, will ya? I know you've heard it a hundred times.." and with that, the brown tom left, making his way to Breezepaw's den.
The blind retired warrior moved forward. "When SkyClan split up, all three of the friends went to two different Clans. Wolfie, who was renamed Wolfscar...though we all still call him Wolfie...and Charlie, who was now named Firelight, joined MoonClan, which is the best Clan." that got a few giggles from the kits. It was good to see they were still in high spirits. "Starfire, who was renamed Nightfire, left to move to SnowClan."
"Why did she leave her fwiends?" Frogkit mewed, her voice slowly getting softer with each word.
Dave laughed. "Well...she was tired of Wolfie and Firelight always fighting over her."
"Where's Firelight now? Is he in StarClan?" Ridgekit asked.
Dave looked at Burntgaze, for he didn't know. "He moved to PebbleClan when it was formed," the white she-cat mewed. "Good riddance, too--he and Wolfie would never shut up. Always fighting, always fighting."
Wolfscar shakingly looked at Breezepaw. "Am I going to die?" he asked. He'd never believed in StarClan, so what would happen to him? He had to admit he was afraid.
"Wolfie, you're very old." Breezepaw mewed. "Death...is nothing to be afraid of. I've talked to cats in StarClan about it. They all say it's painless. Like sleeping."
Wolfscar stayed silent for a few moments. "Can you...can you tell Patchstar that I'm going to PebbleClan's camp? And have Hazefire and Deathsong come get me tomorrow."
"PebbleClan? What for?" the dark furred medicine cat wondered.
"I want to see an old friend before I go."
~~
"I'd like to speak to Firelight, please," Wolfscar explained to Docktail, who was leading a patrol along the PebbleClan/FireClan border.
"Firelight? He doesn't talk to anyone anymore," Littleleaf mewed, her apprentice watching Wolfscar with a wrinkled nose.
"This is Wolfscar," Mintstreak explained, "Firelight's kithood friend."
"Call me Wolfie," Wolfscar corrected instinctively.
"Come with us, then, Wolfie." Docktail mewed, tilting his head for him to follow. Into PebbleClan's territory they went, Littleleaf's apprentice, Spotpaw, caught a water vole on the way back, and Mintstreak caught a thrush. Entering the camp, Docktail went to explain to Cursedstar why they had brought a MoonClanner within their territory, and Mintstreak showed Wolfscar to the Elder's den.
Peering his head inside, Wolfscar searched for his friend, who was curled up asleep next to the further wall. The brown elder made his way slowly to his ginger furred friend, whose pelt was slowly turning gray with age, no longer as firey and light as it used to be. He almost tripped over Mousebelly, and he whispered his apologies.
"Firelight," he called, and his friend didn't stir. "Firelight!" Again, nothing. "...Charlie, please wake up."
Firelight opened one eye, focusing on Wolfscar. "Wolfie. What are you doing here?"
"Firelight...I might not have too much time left here. I wanted...I wanted to see you."
"What do you mean?"
"I'm old, you crazy furball. I think I'm going to die. Can I...can I sleep here with you tonight? Deathsong and Hazefire are going to come get me tomorrow. I just...one night. Like old times."
Firelight said nothing for a few moments, before moving his fluffy orange tail and gestured for his friend to lay down. Wolfscar gratefully curled up next to his friend, voicing his thanks before drifting into a painless sleep next to his friend.
When he woke up, he was met with beautiful amber eyes.
"Hiya Wolfie," came a silky, rejuvinated voice.
"Star," he smiled, grateful to see the beautiful gray-and-white she-cat. "Have I ever told you that your eyes are like two crystal-clear pools?"
